This paper explores how exotic dancers negotiate the presence of female customers in strip clubs, which are conceived of as explicitly male spaces. We conducted ethnographic research at four strip clubs in southern California, employing an active participant researcher role. Drawing on Goffman’s (1959) dramaturgical analysis, particularly his use of “front stage” performance, we observed three main interactional processes through which dancers contend with the participation of female customers in club activities: passing over, sidestaging, and tailoring. We find that women in strip clubs are unable to fully adopt the role of customer because gender remains a master status. The techniques that dancers use in dealing with female customers, combined with the organizational design of the club, prevent women from participating in strip club activities in a way comparable to that of male customers.

Rihanna Topples Katy Perry On Hot 100
Rihanna's "Disturbia" puts an end to the seven-week run at No. 1 by Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl" on the Billboard Hot 100, rising 3-1 after selling 148,000 downloads, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It's Rihanna's fourth chart-topper here, tying her with Beyonce and Mariah Carey for the most by a female artist this decade.
Chris Brown's "Forever" holds at No. 2, while "I Kissed a Girl" slides to No. 3. Another Rihanna song, "Take a Bow," remains at No. 4, followed by M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes," which jumps from No. 16 to a career-best No. 5 as the chart's top digital gainer. The track, which sold more than 136,000 downloads, appears in the trailer for the new comedy "Pineapple Express."
Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" slips 5-6, Kardinal Offishall's "Dangerous" featuring Akon holds at No. 7 and Lil Wayne's "A Milli" falls 6-8. Rounding out the top 10, the Jonas Brothers' 'Burnin' Up" rises 11-9, and Ne-Yo's "Closer" stays at No. 10.
The chart's top debut comes from another Jonas Brothers song with the title track to their new album, "A Little Bit Longer." The track starts at No. 11 with 131,000 downloads; the album of the same name is a lock to debut next week at No. 1 on The Billboard 200. Also new is rapper the Game's "My Life" featuring Lil Wayne at No. 21.
Jennifer Hudson: The Triple Threat
Jennifer Hudson doesn't drink coffee. Doesn't like it, she says. Doesn't need it, counters her manager, Miguel Melendez.
It's 6:20 a.m. on a Monday morning in July, and an uncaffeinated Hudson is busting full throttle through her warm-ups during a sound check for a performance on "Good Morning America." It was her first TV appearance in support of "Spotlight," the debut single from her first album.
Hudson shakes off any concerns about the ungodly hour. ("The band got there at 4:30 a.m.," she notes.) Melendez, meanwhile, clutched his venti Starbucks as he watched. "Good Lord, she makes me feel old," he sighs.
It's easy to forget Hudson's youth, perhaps thanks to the years she's spent in the pop culture spotlight. At 26, her career path may be impossible to duplicate: She went from being a choir singer at her church in her hometown of Chicago to a Disney Cruise Line chanteuse to an "American Idol" contestant to an Academy Award winner for best supporting actress for her role in "Dreamgirls." Thanks to the ever-expanding entertainment landscape, what this means is that Hudson has built a significant career on a multiple-octave voice--without releasing an album.
John Legend, Raphael Saadiq Team For Tour
John Legend will begin a short fall tour Nov. 19 in Minneapolis in support of his upcoming album, "Evolver," due Oct. 28. Columbia labelmate Raphael Saadiq will support on the trek, which wraps Dec. 13 in Durham, N.C.
The singer's current single, "Green Light" featuring Andre 3000, is No. 32 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart this week. "Evolver" also features appearances from Kanye West, Estelle and Brandy.
"This album doesn't sound like me," Legend tells Billboard. "The tempo is faster than I've done before. It will be different for people, because 'Evolver' has a bit more instrumentation than I've used before. But it's not like you won't recognize the artist-it's still me."
Britney Bounces Back With Three VMA Wins
Britney Spears returned to the MTV Video Music Awards in a major way last night (Sept. 7) in Los Angeles, getting the last laugh after a disastrous 2007 appearance by winning the first three awards of her career: female video, pop video and video of the year for "Piece of Me."
Spears was the talk of the 2007 VMAs for all the wrong reasons following her lethargic performance of "Gimme More" as part of the opening segment. But she was a picture of professionalism and poise this time around, as she introduced the show and appeared in a comedic pre-show sketch with actor Jonah Hill. She also guested in several promo ads with host Russell Brand.
"Wow. I'm in shock right now. I was not expecting this!," Spears said after accepting the video of the year trophy, the biggest prize of the night. Chris Brown won male video of the year for "With You," while the Pussycat Dolls won for best dancing in a video with "When I Grow Up" and Linkin Park took home best rock video for "Shadow of the Day."
Lil Wayne won best hip-hop video for "Lollipop," while German rock outfit Tokio Hotel upset Jordin Sparks, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift to win the fan-voted best new artist honor.
Rihanna was the first performer at the 25th anniversary event, racing through "Disturbia" surrounded by dancers seemingly straight out of Michael Jackson's "Thriller." The Jonas Brothers performed "Love Bug" on the Paramount Studios New York back lot, while a shirtless Lil Wayne was joined by Leona Lewis and T-Pain for a medley of his hits.

Wayne later joined Kid Rock for his recent smash "All Summer Long," and Christina Aguilera unveiled her new single, "Keeps Gettin' Better" in a medley with a steamy transformation of her early hit "Genie in a Bottle."
Kanye West closed the show by performing a new song, "Love Lockdown," expected to appear on his next album. The as-yet-untitled set is due by year's end via Def Jam.
Other performances, several of which took place on sets outside on the Paramount lot, were turned in by T.I. (first on his current Hot 100 No. 1 hit "Whatever You Like" and then with Rihanna on the new "Live Your Life"), Paramore, Perry (covering Madonna's "Like a Virgin") and Pink.
English comedian Brand peppered his commentary with off-color jokes about the Jonas Brothers' virginity, Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin's family life and Madonna's alleged affair with baseball star Alex Rodriguez. Presenter Jordin Sparks took exception to Brand's repeated joking about the Jonas Brothers' purity rings, saying that "not everybody wants to be a slut."
Eminem 'Banging Out Tracks' For New Album
After years away from the limelight, Eminem may be releasing a new album this year.
The MC admitted he's been producing for his Shady Records artists and himself during a recent appearance on his Sirius satellite radio station, Shade 45, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Delicious Vinyl Records. Eminem also interviewed MC Masta Ace, who he's long noted as an influence.
"I'm concentrating on my own stuff right now -just banging out tracks," Eminem said. "The more I keep producing, the better it seems I get. I start knowing stuff, learning the boards like the back of my hands."
A representative for Interscope says there is no official release date nor a first single, but confirms that an album may come before the year's end. Eminem's last effort, "Encore," was released in 2004.
In addition, 50 Cent spoke to BBC's Radio 1 this week and said fans will be "seeing [Eminem] shortly. He's working. I spent the weekend at his house. Even though he tries to relax and stay home, it's impossible for him to stay in."
Beyonce Turns The Tables In 'Boy' Video
Beyonce will release videos for her two new singles "If I Were a Boy" and "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" via MTV, BET, VH1 and Fuse on Monday (Oct. 13). The two songs were released to radio this week and are the first from her forthcoming, as-yet-untitled album, due Nov. 18 via Music World/Columbia.
"It's kind of like 'Freaky Friday'," Beyonce tells Billboard of the concept behind the "If I Were a Boy" clip, where she plays a police officer. "In the beginning of the video, my husband makes me breakfast and he's excited about it, and I kind of don't have time to eat. As a police officer, I have a male partner and the video goes through our days. My husband's at work and has attractive girls flirting with him but he declines their advances. I have a guy flirting with me, and I flirt back."
Beyonce says the clip will depict common things that men do to hurt their significant others, like not answering their phone.
"It's about all of the little things that mean so much in a relationship," says Beyonce. "At the end of the clip, you realize that I was acting out his life, and it all starts over again. He was a cop and everything that happened was really him doing the same thing to me."
Both videos were directed by Jake Nava, who previously helmed Beyonce's "Baby Boy" featuring Sean Paul.
